On Location
Painting on location with J. Carolyn Liedtke
Painting on location is a total experience for me! Whether it's overlooking a placid Maine harbor, the colorful Amalfi Coast, a dazzling Caribbean beach, sun-drenched Tuscan rooftops, or the dewy Irish countryside, I remember many things about the places I have painted not only the way they looked, but the sounds, the smells and the feelings I experienced while painting them.
I try to incorporate these other senses into my paintings inviting the viewer to share the sound of moving water, the smell of salty air, the crisp warmth of spring in Ireland, or the oppressive heat of an Italian summer. It's difficult to convey these feelings when working in my studio. That's why most of each painting is done on location.
| I bring
my watercolors with me wherever I go. People tend to stop
and comment when they see me painting on location--it
seems everyone is, has been, or knows someone who is--an
artist. What interesting encounters I have had! To inquire about buying one of my paintings, or to commission a painting of your favorite place, you can e-mail keyart@jefnet.com or write to me c/o Key Artworks, P.O. Box 281, Lake Mills, Wisc. 53551. You can also reach me by phone at 920-648-7816. NOTE: All of these paintings, including those that are marked SOLD, are available in digital prints, matted to fit 11x14 frames, for only $59 (plus shipping). |
I have many paintings, sketches and photos of other places in Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Canada and throughout the United States. Each of them represents a special moment in time for me--perhaps for you, too.

'On
the Terrace, Ravello' Original watercolor I did this watercolor sitting on the terrace of our hotel in Ravello. The flowersgeraniilike the clear sunshine and bloom profusely throughout Italy. |
'Cannes Park' Original
watercolor Imagine painting on a bench in a park on the French Riviera! I'll always remember the flowers, the plashing water, the lush, tropical scent, and the comments of passersby (in French), complimentary, I hope. |

'Bolongo
Bay' Original
watercolor This lovely Caribbean view was from the condo we rented in St. Thomas. I have few paintings left from this gorgeous spot--the owner of the condo bought most of them. |
'Cortona, Under the Tuscan Sun' Original
watercolor This Tuscan landscape, painted from the edge of town, shows the patchwork of olive green and wheat gold, interlaced with calm, blue lakes and polka-dotted with bright red poppies. |

'Azaleas
in Ravello' Original
watercolor On the Italian Riviera, every viewpoint is gorgeous! This was the view from another terrace of our hotel. In addition to framing the view, the azaleas covered the roof of the terrace in every shade of pink and red. |
'Home Place, County Sligo' Original
watercolor Ireland's everchanging skies, sparkling lakes and rolling countryside all combine to make it an artist's paradise, as well as a poet's inspiration. Ten children were raised in this charming cottage! |

'Poppies in
Ravello' Original
watercolor I was happily ensconced in an outdoor restaurant when I painted this landscape (see photo above). I did as much as I could in one sitting, because I didn't think I could hike up there again. |
'Assissi Street Scene' Original
watercolor There is not a straight street in Assissi--it's all ups and downs. Since the earthquake, there are very few buildings that are straight either. I left out the cars and scooters that we had to dodge to paint on location. |

| 'Amalfi
Fishing Boats' Original watercolor It was a happy day, painting the beautiful view with occasional breaks to have another gelato. I pescatori paid little attention to the view. |
|
'Caldarola View' Original
watercolor This is the view from our home in central Italy--along the spine of the Appenines. Farms in Italy are very different from our Wisconsin farms--they're more like garden plots, forming tight patchwork designs in the landscape. |

'Venice Canal' Original
watercolor If you venture out early in the morning, before the tourists take over, you can see quiet canal scenes like this. Did you know that in Venice even deliveries are made in the morning via boat instead of truck? |

'South Harbor, Maine' Original
watercolor We stayed at a homestead in Bar Harbor one summer (a painting of the house is in the Portraits gallery) and ate fresh lobster almost every night. What a treat! |
